1. Currency & Daily Costs 💵

Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency. While things are generally cheaper than in the U.S., here’s what you can expect:

  • City buses: $0.35 per ride
  • Metro: $0.45 per ride
  • Intercity buses: ~$1.50/hour (e.g., a 3-hour ride = ~$4.50)
  • Local lunch (almuerzo): ~$2.50-3.50 (includes soup, rice, meat, and juice)
  • Western-style restaurants: ~$7–12 for a meal

2. Sit Toward the Front of the Plane ✈️

All international flights tend to arrive in Quito around the same time, and customs lines can get long fast. Sitting near the front of the plane means you’ll clear immigration quicker and avoid the worst of the line — it can take over 1.5 hours if you’re toward the back.

3. Know the Seasons 🗓️

High season runs from May to August, and during December. Expect:

  • Busier hostels — consider booking ahead
  • Slight price increases at some accommodations
  • More crowds at popular attractions

4. Pack for All Weather ☔

Ecuador’s microclimates mean you could experience sun, rain, and wind all in one day. Bring:

  • A rain jacket
  • A windbreaker or light jacket
  • An extra pair of shoes (in case one gets soaked)

Typical temperature ranges:

  • Coast: 24°C–30°C (80°F–92°F)
  • Amazon: 20°C–28°C (72°F–88°F)

Rainy season: December–May, but sunny days are still common during these months.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Belongings 🎒

  • As with any travel destination, stay alert.
  • Keep valuables like cameras out of sight when not in use
  • Use wrist straps or secure bags when carrying devices
  • Split your cash between multiple pockets or pouches
  • Avoid flashing large amounts of money

6. Bring Essentials with You ☀️

  • Sunscreen: Essential due to the high altitude — and pricey to buy locally
  • Bug spray: Especially important if visiting the Amazon or coastal areas

7. Take It Easy at High Altitude 🏔️

  • Quito sits at 2,850m (9,350 ft) above sea level. Whether or not you’re used to high elevations, your body may need time to adjust:
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol the first day or two
  • Take it slow and rest if you feel tired or dizzy
